Botanical Watercolour Tuition

Ann offers regular weekly classes, as well as short courses, in the art of botanical watercolour painting at her studio in the leafy suburb of Craighall Park in Johannesburg.
Her classes are tailored to suit both beginners and advanced students alike.
Classes are small, structured and progressive, and all subjects are backed by demonstrations and lectures.
Beginners are given a thorough grounding, and are allowed the freedom to progress at their own pace.
Ann also teaches the fine art of porcelain painting.

1. Cone, Sphere, Cylinder – basic shapes and pencil shading
2. Perspective – one and two vanishing points
3. Negative Space – as a tool for drawing
4. Ivy Leaf – written description, rubbing, structure, pencil shading
5. Colour Theories – Katy Lee and general
6. Stems – thick, thin, shaped and textured
7. Root & Modified Plant Parts
8. Leaves – theory and colour
9. Ivy Leaf – colour
10. Page of leaf study – different textures and highlights
11. Leaf Perspective
12. Apple – sphere, colour and wash
13. Pear – cone + sphere
14. Mushroom – cylinder + hemisphere
15. Berries, Cherries, Grapes – sphere, colour and texture
16. Granadilla – layering/washes
17. Avocado – cone + sphere, texture and colour
18. Banana – working with yellow
19. Pineapple – the challenge, form, detail and complexity
20. Whole Plant – flower, stem, roots
21. Butterflies, Insects, Feathers, Seeds
22. Advanced Classes – stretch you in different directions

Name: Ann Judith Harris-Deppe
(The Deppe is to differentiate from Ann Harris the Chief Rabbi’s wife, Ann Harris the station bomber’s wife, Ann Harris the landscape gardener and many more...)

Born: 1947 - Accra, Ghana

Studies: ‘O’ and ‘A’ level art
Freie Kunstschule, Stuttgart 1965

Career: Porcelain painter and teacher since 1980

Awards: 1998 Bronze Award - International Porcelain Painting exhibition.
1999 Gold Award - National Porcelain Painting exhibition.
Exhibitions: Venice, Paris, Denmark, Brazil, Italy, Portugal

Botanical Watercolours since 1999. - Taught by Jenny Phillips, Siriol Sherlock, Katie Lee, Gill Condy, Miriam Stern, Diana Carmichael and Anne-Marie Evans.

Collection: SANBI (South African National Bio-diversity Institute) purchased three of her "Seeds of Southern Africa" for Head Office in Pretoria.

General: Ann was fortunate to be introduced to botanical art by the best teachers there are worldwide. She was so thoroughly satisfied with the medium and subject that she decided to dedicate the rest of her life to recording the splendours of nature and to bring them to the notice of others. Ann’s subjects include plants, pollinators, insects, birds and small mammals. She is intrigued by detail and has found that this is a subject that cannot be painted without acknowledging a Higher Being. Nature is so extraordinarily complex, intricate and self sufficient that her path of discovery gives her unending pleasure. No matter what the subject, the process of painting fills her with wonder.

She opened the Ann Harris Botanical and Porcelain Art School, in Johannesburg in 2003.
